Haruhiko Okura, president of Gekkeikan Sake Company, Ltd. (Kyoto City) recently paid a courtesy visit to Gekkeikan's U.S. sole agent, Sidney Frank Importing Co., Inc. (New Rochelle, New York), to celebrate 40 years of Gekkeikan in America. Gekkeikan is the first brand Sidney Frank handled when it was established in 1972, and the company has devoted itself for a full four decades to cultivating the market and promoting sake throughout America.

In addition to sake, Sidney Frank handles European liquors, whiskeys, brandies, and many other spirits. The company has long leveraged its strengths as an importer of spirits to promote the sale of sake not only to Japanese and other Asian restaurants, but also to consumers through liquor shops, supermarkets and numerous other kinds of retail outlets. Sales are rising in the Midwest and South as well as in major cities on the East and West Coasts, and the USA has become the largest market for sake outside Japan. Through its marketing efforts over the years to develop custom among an increasing diversity of businesses, Sidney Frank has made a tremendous contribution to the market growth and popularity of sake in the USA.

The first half of Sidney Frank's 40 year association with Gekkeikan was devoted entirely to selling sake exported from Japan. Then in 1989, Gekkeikan established Gekkeikan Sake (USA), Inc. in Folsom, California, as a US subsidiary and began shipping US-made sake in 1991. Since then, Sidney Frank has supplied the American market with sake produced by Gekkeikan in both countries. It currently handles about 20 US-made and 10 Japan-made Gekkeikan products, selling an annual 4,000 kl in the USA.
